F & G Vineyards is located in the noted California Central Coast AVA of Arroyo Seco. Sitting just to the east of Santa Lucia Mountains, Arroyo Seco and F & G Vineyards are situated ideally to grow Sauvignon Blanc and other varietals that perform well in environments where coastal cooling combines with warmer inland days. Nestled in the southern portion of the Salinas Valley, the vineyard enjoys the effects of the Pacific Ocean streaming down the valley whose mouth sits 40 miles to the north northwest of the AVA. It is one of the oldest of all California appellations and has been producing top quality grapes for several decades.
Long noted as a premier region for Chardonnay vineyards, growers such as F & G owner, Michael Griva, have been working to put Sauvignon Blanc on the map for several years, realizing the excellent terroir that Arroyo Seco provides for the grape. Specifically, F & G, as well as others in the region, have found a great fit with the Sauvignon Musqué clone. It is a variant that performs well and ripens nicely in cooler locations, unlike most other Sauvignon Blancs that, generally, prefer a little more heat. (Watch for our upcoming feature on Musqué, coming soon.) F & G has embraced the clone and found success with several wineries that source their grapes from Michael. They are the vineyard behind two excellent vineyard designate wines – since 2001, the Bernardus Sauvignon Blanc “Griva Vineyard” (the name that is used for designate wines from F & G) and, more recently, the Martin Ranch Sauvignon Blanc “Griva Vineyard,” produced since 2010. They are also the fruit used in the noted J. Lohr Flume Crossing Arroyo Seco Monterey Sauvignon Blanc as well as growing for Morgan Winery and Luli Winery.
Here is a description, to give you a “flavor,” by the folks at Bernardus regarding Michael’s vineyard and the resulting Sauvignon Blanc fruit featured in their 2012 vineyard designate wine:
“The soils are very sandy and rocky which, along with the sunny, breezy climate, produce exceptional grapes with pronounced varietal character accented by a note of minerality. The Griva Sauvignon Blanc vineyard is planted exclusively with the Musqué clone of Sauvignon Blanc which is highly prized for its intense aromatic and flavor expression.”
Michael’s family began farming on the Central Coast in 1868 and has operated the same plot on which the vineyard is located since 1905. Michael first planted winegrapes there in 1998 and continues to farm vegetables, as well. Today, F & G Vineyards is home to 338 total acres of winegrapes with 30 dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc. However, Michael is more than doubling down on the promise of the Musqué clone in Arroyo Seco and is currently planting another 40 acres. As Michael noted, the small (but growing) number of wineries found in the AVA have really embraced the grape. He refers to it as his “flagship” varietal, and as he is also the President of the Arroyo Seco Appellation, we here at SIAG think that the grape has a tremendous standard bearer in the region. We are exceptionally pleased to have F & G Vineyards as part of the Summertime in a Glass family.
SauvBlancTV – Episode 5 – We visit with Michael Griva, Owner/Grower of Griva Vineyards in Arroyo Seco. In this episode, we talk with Michael about his vineyard, its history, and his Sauvignon Blanc program that centers around the Sauvignon Musqué clone…
